Port-Free and In Remission

Monday, June 14, 2010 I got my port out. The gynecological oncologist and the hematologist / oncologist said ok! I made the appointment to remove it fast.

Removing a port is an in-office procedure. They give you a numbing agent, make a cut, and pull it out (with care). Then they stitch you up. I had a rather common reaction while they were pulling the port out – I almost fainted. I got to sit still for 10 minutes or so afterwords to make sure I didn’t pass out walking out.

I guess the screams of pain when they gave me the local had already scared too many waiting patients. I have really sensitive skin.

I bet some of you are wondering what my CA-125 was? It was a completely normal and remission fulfilling 10!

Of course, my pekinese is irritated at me for not picking him up while that wound heals.

Now the irritating news.

It seems I have a rather common tongue fungal infection that the periodontist found. He sees it in cancer survivors all the time. I have one problem. Even though Majic Mouthrinse is compounded the suspension solution used uses benzyl alcohol (allergic) and two corn derivatives: sorbitol and glycerin. I tried to tell the periodontist this while I was there, but he said it was compounded. Now I have to figure out what to do to treat this problem.

  • If my best friend wasn’t napping in my living room right now, I would be hooting and hollering with joy right now. Instead, I am eating chocolate to suppress the hoots and hollers, but let me assure you that I am thrilled to hear this news. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

I’m trying to think of things to use for your tongue – grapefruit seed extract would probably help, but it’s in glycerin. What about gentian violet? I don’t know what it is in – alcohol of some kind, I think, but it would be worth checking out. And what kind of fungus is it – thrush or something else? If it’s thrush, you could try using acidophilus powders – they shouldn’t contain any corn derivatives. Of course you’d know much better than I. None of my suggestions taste very good, either… Anyway, good luck getting that cleared up. You deserve to celebrate with absolutely no reservations!

  • Dora:

Great news, Melissa! (Except for the fungus. Yuck. Hope you can figure out something.) Congrats!

  • Hooray!

Is it possible to call a compounding pharmacy and see if there are any alternatives they can use to make the suspension?

  • If anyone can come up with a solution for the solution, it would be you.

SOOOO thrilled to hear you have ditched the port and that or all intensive purposes, it is for good!

  • Wonderful news about your remission! Congratulations!!!

    ((((hugs))))

  • Yay for being port-free and double yay for being in remission!

Boo for the fungus. Hope you can get that worked out soon.

  • Lut C.:

Fabulous news, the remission and being port-free.

Are there home remedies against fungus that you can use while you search for a medicine you can take? Yoghurt pops up into my brain, but don’t know why. Vinegar?

Congratulations on remission and being port-free!

And now, it’s time for my chemistry joke that I never get to use any more:

If you’re not part of the solution…you’re part of the precipitate! (Ahahahahaha)

Ahem, anyway, I hope that there is some solution to your fungus issue. I second the suggestion to call a pharmacist.

  • Alexicographer:

Hey — saw your news in LFCA. Wow! Wow! Congratulations!!! On the remission, not the fungus, of course — hope you’re able to find a workable treatment for the latter (it’s always something, isn’t it?). But still — woohoo!

  • Congrats on your news – I know how good it feels. I’ve never known about the tongue thing though. I got my clean bill of health from a battle with Melanoma in July of last year and ever since have dealt with “Geographic Tongue”. The only thing that’s helped it was using a strong mouthwash and acupuncture. Just a heads up.

  • SO glad to hear this.

  • What fabulous news, about the port and the CA-125!

I hope you find a good solution for your mouth soon.

  • Woohoo!!!That’s fabulous!! :)

  • Wonderful, wonderful news…!!!!

Now let’s get infection cleared up.
    oxoxo, Pamela
